U.S. Seizes Iranian-Linked Tanker as Hormuz Standoff Intensifies
The Pentagon escalates maritime enforcement in the Strait of Hormuz, capturing another oil tanker linked to Iranian smuggling while Tehran retaliates by seizing cargo ships. Global oil markets reel as Brent crude surpasses $100 per barrel.
The United States military has seized another oil tanker connected to Iranian oil smuggling, escalating a high-stakes standoff in the Strait of Hormuz that has already sent shockwaves through global energy markets.
Pentagon Tightens the Noose
On Thursday, U.S. forces seized the Majestic X, a Guyana-flagged oil tanker, in the Indian Ocean between Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The vessel—previously named Phonix—had been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2024 for smuggling Iranian crude oil in violation of American sanctions.
The Defense Department released video footage of U.S. forces on the deck of the tanker during the seizure. “We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate,” the Pentagon stated.
The Majestic X was bound for Zhoushan, China, at the time of its seizure—roughly the same location where the oil tanker Tifani was previously captured by American forces.
Iran’s Retaliation
The seizure came just one day after Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guards took control of two cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz itself, intensifying Tehran’s assault on shipping through the crucial waterway.
This escalation marks a significant escalation in the conflict that has effectively choked off nearly all oil exports through the strait—with no end in sight.
Global Economic Impact
The consequences are already being felt worldwide:
- Brent crude oil has nosed over $100 per barrel, a 35% increase from prewar levels
- Gas prices are skyrocketing far beyond the Middle East region
- Food costs and a wide array of consumer products are becoming more expensive
- Europe is losing approximately 500 million euros ($600 million) each day due to the disruption
European Union Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned Wednesday of lasting impact for consumers and businesses, likening the crisis to other major energy disruptions over the last half-century.
Despite the economic turbulence, stock markets appear to be shrugging off the crisis—so far.
The Ceasefire Question
On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump extended a ceasefire while maintaining an American blockade of Iranian ports. The strategic ambiguity—continued military pressure coupled with diplomatic overtures—leaves the path to de-escalation unclear.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical chokepoints, through which 20% of the world’s traded oil passes in peacetime. With both sides digging in, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
