Indonesia Celebrates Historic Unified Eid al-Adha 2026 on May 27

For the first time in years, the Indonesian government, NU, and Muhammadiyah align on the same Eid al-Adha date, bringing unity to millions of Muslims nationwide.

In a remarkable display of unity, Indonesian Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Adha (Lebaran Idul Adha) together on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. This year marks a significant moment as the government, Indonesia’s largest Islamic organizations, and independent observers have all agreed on the same date — a rarity in the nation’s history of sometimes divergent lunar calendar determinations.

A Rare Moment of Unity

Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, has historically seen differences in determining Islamic holiday dates. The government, through the Ministry of of Religion (Kementerian Agama), uses the hisab and rukyat methods along with the MABIMS criteria, which requires the hilal (new moon) to reach a minimum altitude of 3 degrees with an elongation of 6.4 degrees to be visible.

Meanwhile, organizations like Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) use the Imkanur Rukyah Nahdlatul Ulama (IRNU) criteria, while Muhammadiyah relies on the Kalender Hijriah Global Tunggal (KHGT) based on hisab calculations.

This year, however, all three have reached the same conclusion: 1 Zulhijah 1447 H falls on Monday, May 18, 2026, making 10 Zulhijah (Eid al-Adha) fall on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

What This Means for Indonesian Muslims

The unified date brings several benefits for the faithful:

  1. Preparation Clarity: Families can confidently prepare for qurban (sacrifice) knowing the exact date
  2. Workplace Coordination: Companies and government offices can plan leave schedules without confusion
  3. Family Gatherings: The certainty allows families to make travel arrangements well in advance

Official Holiday Schedule

The government has officially designated the following dates:

  • Wednesday, May 27, 2026: National holiday (Libur Nasional) — Eid al-Adha
  • Thursday, May 28, 2026: Collective leave (Cuti Bersama)

This follows the SKB (Joint Decree) of the Minister of Religion, Minister of Manpower, and Minister of Administrative Reform (Nomor 1497/2025, Nomor 2/2025, and Nomor 5/2025).

The Significance of Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. In Indonesia, the holiday is marked by:

  • Morning prayers at mosques and open prayer grounds
  • The ritual sacrifice of animals (qurban) — typically goats, sheep, or cows
  • Distribution of meat to those in need
  • Family gatherings and celebrations

Looking Ahead

As Indonesia approaches this historic unified celebration, the harmony in date determination serves as a symbol of unity among the diverse Muslim community. Whether families are in Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, or beyond, they’ll be celebrating together on the same day.

For those planning to perform qurban, now is the time to select animals and make necessary arrangements. Mosques and mosques throughout the country are already preparing for the large congregations expected on May 27, 2026.

Selamat Hari Raya Idul Adha 1447 H. Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum. (May God accept from us and from you).
